Housing Board flats in Tengah are now complete, and make up nearly 40% of the total 23,000 flats that have been available in the new town.
Residents have also started moving into their homes in the Garden district, the second of five housing districts in Tengah to be built. Plantation was the first; the three other districts that are part of the works include Park, Brickland and Hill.
The keys to 2,936 units within Garden which is 89 per cent of the booked units, which total 3,306, have been collected.
7.921 households have collected the keys to their flats across eight Build-To-Order (BTO) projects located in the Plantation and Garden districts as of Nov 15.
The first batch of Tengah residents received keys to their residences in the Plantation district at the end of August 2023.
Billed as an eco-friendly and car-free “forest” town, the 700ha area in the west region is the first HDB town to be developed since Punggol more than two decades ago.
Tengah is scheduled to be split into five districts, and will offer 42,000 new houses when complete.
Tengah’s Garden district will be home to the residents with 6,500 houses once it is finished. The area is 80ha and comprises a total area of 80 acres.
Part of a 900m-long green connector, known as Garden Farmway, which links residents to facilities for recreation like playgrounds, allotment garden and fitness centers, opened in November.
Another part of the project is expected be completed by the beginning of the quarter of 2025, HDB said in its update on the town.
Residents living in the Garden district will be served by a dining house as well as a grocery store within the Garden Vines @ Tengah BTO project, which is expected to open in the first quarter of 2025. A bakery, medical and dental clinics are also planned.
In the Plantation district, the Plantation Farmway, which connects the four BTO projects there to the town’s first neighbourhood center, will be completed by the end 2024.
A community club will also be finished by that point.
HDB announced the opening of 40 new shops and eateries have been opened in the Plantation Plaza neighborhood centre. They include a restaurant called Swensen’s, DIY Hub hardware store and Teo Heng Family KTV Studio.
A Giant supermarket along with a Koufu Foodcourt as well as a McDonald’s fast-food outlet were the first businesses to be opened in June.
In September and August two pre-schools situated within the Plantation Grange BTO project as well as the Plantation Acres BTO project were opened. In 2025, two additional preschools will be established within the Plantation district.
HDB has said that it will work in conjunction with the Early Childhood Development Agency in order to open preschools slowly within each BTO project located in the Garden district.
Four bus routes are available for residents. City Direct’s bus service 674, that connects Tengah residents with the Central Business District, began operating on November 25. Three other bus services namely 870, 871 and 992 take residents to Bukit Batok and Jurong East.
Tengah Town is expected to grow quickly and further infrastructure and amenities in and surrounding Tengah are planned to help residents and provide them with the same conveniences that towns like HDB towns.
